Where The Heart Is: Heart Is On What Side?

Updated: Nov 12, 2023

Many of you are wondering where the heart is located in your chest.

That's a great question.

Many believe that the heart is located over in the middle of the left chest.

To some extent, that is true. Much of the heart is located in the middle of the left chest.

However, in most people, some of the heart is also located in the middle of your chest, behind your breast bone called your "sternum".

Typically, a bit of the heart is also over in the right side of your chest, towards your sternum.

That's why when we listen to your heart, we listen to the right and left sides of your chest.

That's also why when we obtain an electrocardiogram (ECG, EKG), we place the sticky/adhesive electrode patches on the left side of your chest, and a bit across your sternum towards the right side of your chest as well.

Now you know.
